Comparing the Roles of Filter and EQ Plugins
I got to thinking about whether there's any functional difference between filters and EQs...

About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
My channel is these things:
1. A place to share my music - both songs and instrumental pieces. Much of the music I write features in...
2. Tutorial videos about music composition and production
3. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase (currently Cubase 12).
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

    Great series. Steinberg is active with videos but they're mostly tips and tricks and 'making corestep with dj toilet plunger'. People whose learning style is more show (videos) than tell (a manual) aren’t really catered to. So this is important. Thanks and much appreciated.

    Very helpful. Question about offline work on a range: Is there a way to later identify what was done in offline processing to a range in an event? And can you return easily to the same range to make changes? I do see the indicator that the target was a range, but don't see how to return to precisely that same range for additional work. Thanks to anyone who can help me understand this.

    • @OneManAndHisSongs

      I'm not aware of any way to do this, and I agree that it would be very helpful to be able to do that. I think it's because when you execute a DOP process, you create a physical audio file (in the 'Edits' folder of your project) that represents that single process. I guess Steinberg figure that if you want to add extra processing to the range you'll just select it again, but it would be great if you could double click the little range image in the DOP window and have Cubase select that section of the event again.

    Fantastic that you added William Orbit to the list. Scored points for that one, and also Ozric Tentacles by the way. But William Orbit's Strange Cargo is amazing. For a long time you keep hearing new sounds and details every time you play it. Everything somehow fits. Funny thing was that it was released I think in 1992 or 1993. 5 years after that Madonna released her Ray of Light album, and you can instantly hear the magic of William Orbit in it. Madonna may not be your cup of tea, especially live, but Ray of Light is a masterpiece, and Orbit definitely deserves a lot of credit for that one.

    Really like the styles, it’s a close as you can get to ‘playing ‘the drums live in a DAW better than any other Drum VST, just wish there were more of them. Pity the other VSTs don’t have this live element, basically your stuck with dropping the midi patterns into your DAW unlike styles where you can play the midi patterns and record them into the daw!

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs 3 дні тому

      Exactly. The kit contains the sounds, the style contains the patterns, and they are COMPLETELY interchangeable. The only caveat I'd add is that some styles use kit pieces that might not be present in an alternative kit, and those notes will just output silence, but that doesn't happen very often.

    Hi! Question: Using download manager I downloaded & installed some sound packs that I decided NOT to purchase. I tried deleting the packs but now I have references to the deleted packs in the media bay i.e. my searches include preset/audio file names next to a RED dot with a dash in the middle...maybe indicating missing? How can I get rid of these references to the deleted sounds?

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs 3 дні тому

      If you've deleted the content off your hard drive and refreshed the Media Bay (right click on the top 'All Media' node) they should disappear. It's not something I've encountered so I'm not sure why that wouldn't work, and I don't want to just say "delete your preferences folder" because I think that's a ridiculous thing to ask a user to do (but I've had that reply from Support in the past). You could try locating the root folder in MediaBay and unticking it, but if it's a VST sound folder I've seen Cubase re-add them back in the next time you launch the program :( Download Manager is a bit of a catastrophe. It really needs a complete overhaul. Oh, one final thing I just thought of: have a look to see if there's anything in your Steinberg Library Manager that you can delete.

    Wow, this was a great tutorial! I'm still new to Cubase, though I'm an experienced DAW user coming from Logic and before that Ableton. Both of those have file browsing systems but much simpler - very limited support for rating, tagging, and sorting. Mediabay is vastly more powerful than I'm used to, but admittedly quite intimidating and overwhelming at first when you open it up- especially when you're used to a rather simple text-based search. But this tutorial put me at ease and clarified many of my questions. Also I can relate so much to what you said at around 1:35 about losing entire months of your life at sorting and rating - when I first started in production I considered it my responsibility to listen to, tag, and organize every synth preset and sample library I owned. I would go through drum loops and meticiulously add their tempo manually, and find the key to tonal loops. I believed it was something I had to do in order to create music. After a few months of this and realizing it truly is a Sisyphean task, with tens of thousands of presets and samples ahead of me - I decided it was best to just do it on a case-by-case basis. But I understand that urge as an incurable sorter 🤣 Anyway, thanks again and cheers!

You can export the MIDI files individually, or glue them all together and export them as one mass file, or even save the data as a MidiLoop in Cubase - that way the GA drum kit will be saved along with the MIDI data (that's what a MidiLoop is - VST Instrument + MIDI data).

My index finger is 12 mm lower than my ring finger against the middle finger. and my pinky another 22 mm lower than my ring finder. It is not very uniform and makes many tasks harder that would otherwise be easier with fingers of very similar length. I bought a junior strat 22.5 inch or so inches 560 mm or close to it. I found this small guitare easy to play, but then there is string tension issues and stability of tuning because they are cheap guitars for kids. I would love a nice mid range 700-1000 CDN- (500 pound or so) guitar that is better built than a kids "learning" guitar. Tried a mustang but the offset felt weird , SG seems like the shorter gibson scale still goes on for miles. One day i will be able to buy a shorter scale well built guitar that I don't have to pay a custom shop thousands so I can play and learn easier.

      I'd love an SG. If I ever buy another guitar, it'll be that. My main fear is that if a grow accustomed to the shorter scale I won't want to play my 25.5 scale guitars any more.

    Excellent. Very methodical way of working. Probably slightly off the intention/scope of your GA5 tutes, but how do you select a 'good kit' for a song to begin with? Does kit tuning and EQ figure? Or do you just use the experience of your ears? I find choosing a style a nightmare using GA5.

      I try not to overthink the very first steps, for fear of getting myself in a creative rut. I'll (sometimes literally) close my eyes and choose a kit/style combo at random, then see where it takes me. It seems to work out well enough. I find the first one or two musical instruments (be it bass, guitar or keys) are just as important to get up & running as quickly as possible in conjunction with GA. Basically, I throw 3 or 4 ingredients into a pot, stir, and then try to exercise my 'taste' buds (excuse the pun!) At this stage, kit tuning it NOT in the game - I want much broader brush strokes than that. There's a great quote from Brian Eno: 'The great benefit of computer sequencers is that they remove the issue of skill, and replace it with the issue of judgement'. I read that with positive eyes, and always try to listen with critical ears to the collisions I stumble upon!

    Excellent. I've been struggling with this too. Always load a new instance of GA now.

      Thanks! I still have my "use this in emergencies" GA project which I dust off if things go pear-shaped ;)

    Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

    Thanks Antony, great video. Super informative, and it's a good idea to break out the full style like that. I'll have to give it a try myself.

    Antony, I cannot thank you enough for your amazing tutorials, especially the ones on groove agent. I have not seen any other tutorials that go into the depths yours do. Your tutorials are unique and so chocked so full of information you need to watch many times to take it all in! Maybe it's just me that's going a bit senile. 🤣 thank you for the time you take to make these videos.

    Hi Anthony. Thanks for this video. I have a question related to the next step operation. I've noticed in my audiotracks that the shape of the audio track changes after time correction if you bounce it. In some case, a note changes from a peak of -2.5 db to a peak of -1 db. Do you know why is that and how to avoid it?

    • @OneManAndHisSongs
      @OneManAndHisSongs 9 днів тому

      I've never observed that behaviour. The only thing that comes to mind is that you have event-based volume control (such as fades) that are being converted into raw audio - that would change the peak level. The point is that operations performed on the event are NON-destructive, but when you execute a bounce you're 'baking in' those changes to the underlying audio.
